jacknose
"you're the antidote to [everything] except for [me]"
text | "talking " | thoughts
| It was an impressively mild leaf fall day, which, given the chilly ones that had preceded it, seemed almost like a gift from Starclan. Jacknose had spent his morning working with Lightningpaw, practicing some hunting tricks and then had left his apprentice in camp to help with his chores. He would not admit it too readily to the young tom--Lightningpaw was excitable enough with the provocation--but he was really growing into his own and getting pretty good. Which just meant it was time for the part of training where he needed to start throwing him more challenges, which was precisely why Jacknose, devoid an apprentice, was on his way to the Treebridge. He was going to scope out some ideas for a training session the next afternoon, trying to decide what spin to put on the situation that would force the young tom to think as much as act.
What he did not expect, however, was for the area to be already inhabited by an apprentice. She was working on something, he noted, green gaze flicking over her movements before searching for Bearpaw's mentor. Owltail was no where to be seen, so the she-cat had clearly come out on her own to practice.
"Not bad, " he called out, rather unenthusiastically, a tone that belied it was just a way to startle her into being aware of his presence and not an actual compliment. It wasn't that Jacknose was a jerk, far from it, but he was also not one to toss out compliments until they were earned. Plus, he knew little about the other cat and was not about to go stroking an ego that might not need it.

. BEARPAW . The treebridge was perhaps her favorite place. Not many cats could maneuver it perfectly every single time they crossed it...and for that reason alone she made it a personal goal to never miss a step. And for the most part, she was doing good. She crossed the bridge as much as she could, multiple times daily. She was all work and no play. And while many didn't see why she was that way, she couldn't imagine being any other way.
So when the sun rose as high as it would get, as warm as it would get, she decided to go hunt. Of course near the tree bridge. While the wind was cold and quite cruel, her dark pelt helped as it soaked up the sun. It also helped that she was constantly moving. And that she was built thicker than most she-cats. She wasn't dainty. It was in the blood of her mother and father,..why her siblings were so...so....puny. Though she still "loved" them. She cared for them in an awkward way. She would defend them, but only if it came down to it. She couldn't outwardly love them in front of everyone. She just wasn't emotional that way, towards her family...because part of her was....disgraced. Except for her mother and father, she was their pride and joy and with that notion she loved them.
Paws carried her right to her destination, and she smiled as her yellow eyes lined up with the fallen trees and branches. Without hesitation she crossed to the center, moving back and forth and working her way back and forth. Soon she was skipping steps and bounding across. Before she settled on a sturdier branch and let herself feel slightly accomplished.
The sudden voice her ears caught made her turn, though not out of nervousness or impulse. She had learned long ago to not let things startle her easily for that was when her mind lost its focus. Owltail had helped her train hard and she was grateful to have the deputy teaching her the clan's ways. Her yellow eyes caught the frame of the tom, she knew his name...Jacknose? Though she didn't "know" him. She snorted and scoffed before wrinkling her nose and shooting back a comment. "I wouldn't accept that comment even if you actually meant it." She walked back towards the solid ground, sitting gracefully and staring intently at him. "As if Lightningpaw isn't enough, you have to spy on me?" While her voice was somewhat playful she couldn't help but wonder what exactly he was doing out here.
