always worrying too much about your appearance, almost as though you’re facing your enemy. a small happy noise escaped the tom's lips as he felt the familiar, soft soil inbetween his toes. oh, how he's missed the marshes. it felt like it'd been ages since he caught the scent of still water and heard the breathe of the weeping, long limbed trees. he didn't have a home (his family didn't believe in the silly notion of home being a place), but if there was one location he wouldn't mind being trapped for an eternity in, he thought it would definitely be the glades.
walks with light didn't spend too much longer breathing in the air of his home away from home, although he would much like to. he had things to do and he was not going to get anything done by standing knee deep in mud like a lunatic. with a bit of a sigh, the fluffy gray tom began walk to higher ground and hopefully away from all the things that would love to get a bite out of him. he'd never been fond of alligators. he suspected the dislike came to be when his mother threatened to feed him to them as a kit when he misbehaved. 'you're as sweet as honey,' she would say with frown on her maw, 'but you're also quite the hellion when no one's looking at you.' oh please, he was the perfect kitten. not at all like his rude older brother, many spots, or his cry baby of a sister, follower.
walks with light loved his family, he really did, he just wanted a new one, mayhaps.
and that brought him back to his current task. he was on the hunt for sweet-gum, which he personally had no use for himself but his mother was complaining about an bellyache that just wouldn't go away. sleeping fox was a naturally laid back she-cat and would rather be struck by lightning than move more than ten foxlengths from her current abode. unluckily for walks with light, she and his father decided to set camp up in a meadow. and he was ever the so-dutiful son, he thought regretfully. the woes of being the middle child.
the gray tom gave a huff of relief when he found what he was looking for: a nice little tree he could clamber up to get a better look of the surroundings. sweet-gum trees naturally had a bit of a sugary scent, but it was much easier just to look for the dark red trees than bother with smelling them out like a dog. and so he dug his claws into the bark of the small tree and began his climb. he just hoped his mother didn't remedy her ailment before he got the herb to her. that'd just be like her, he supposed, to guilt him into a task and just end up getting it done herself. ✿

CAN YOU FEEL? CAN YOU FEEL THAT HYBRID RAINBOW? KOKO WA TOUCHUU NADETTE SHINJITAI Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Rainpaw felt the stinging sensation of un-shed tears in his eyes. He's fallen once again for the pranks of the other apprentices. This time Daisypaw, the leader of the small group of apprentices, sent the small, grey tom in search of a cocoaplum. Cocoaplums. Rainpaw had never seen one before in his life. Yet Daisypaw didn't care. He pushed Rainpaw into the ground and told him that if he didn't bring a the fruit by sundown he would be eating a mouthful of dirt.
With a sigh Rainpaw kneaded the ground as he thought. Cocoaplum. It should be a fruit right? Yellow eyes looked up at the surrounding trees. Maybe it comes from there? He took a step closer to a tree nearest to him, when he heard a rustling. To his surprise he spotted a cat. Maybe he knew where to find it? He was scared. This would be the first time he's ever talked to someone outside of his clan. But he couldn't go back without the cocoaplum. Daisypaw was far scarier than anyother cat he knew. It was worth the risk. "U-um, excuse me..." Rainpaw could hardly force the words out of his mouth. He couldn't keep his paws from trembling. "D-do you know where I can find a c-cocaplum?"

always worrying too much about your appearance, almost as though you’re facing your enemy. walks with light was halfway up the tree, his claws digging into the bark for dear life, when he heard a voice. "u-um, excuse me..." at first, he thought it was just his imagination. after all, the glades were a dangerous place. walking through the mud was a difficult task, and one needed a keen eye to spot the dark heads of alligators who would much like a delicious kitty for dinner. the pale tom naturally assumed that no one was crazy enough to venture out into the wilds of the swamps. well, except him, maybe.
the second shy, hesitant sentence caused him to prick his ears curiously. well, he supposed, he wasn't that mentally ill. after craning his neck to glance towards the roots of the tree, he found the source of the voice: a little cat. he blunk once, twice, then thrice before realizing he wasn't seeing things. awkwardly, he dropped down from the tree to stand in front of the small gray cat. it was only polite, plus his limbs were getting a bit sore from clinging to the trunk of the tree like some kind of ginormous squirrel. "uh, hello, "he managed to get out, his maw shifting into a ghost of a smile, "a cocoplum?"
he had no idea on earth why someone would come all the way out here for one of those. perhaps the gray ball of fur lived in the glades, but he doubted it. the so dire need for the useless red fruit confused walks with light quite a bit, which he showed with an odd look and the tilt of a head. it'd be one thing if cocoplums had any medicinal value or were especially delicious, but they were neither. they did nothing for one's health and, judging by the time his brother tried to eat one, gave cats an upset belly. odd. "well, i suppose i do, but you'll get a belly ache," he warned, an amused look appearing on his features. and then, deciding now was the best time as any, he continued, "excuse me, but who are you? do your parents know you're out here? you're a bit young for starting on your wanderings, i think." the cat didn't even look six moons old, really. a bit of a motherly instinct awoke in walks with light when he stared at the trembling little cat. poor thing! perhaps she was lost. ✿

CAN YOU FEEL? CAN YOU FEEL THAT HYBRID RAINBOW? KOKO WA TOUCHUU NADETTE SHINJITAI To be honest, Rainpaw had to fight the urge to runaway when the older cat began climbing down from the tree. Maybe its just because he's used to being hurt by those older than him. But the older tom seemed nice enough. Yellow eyes widened when the light colored tom mentioned that he knew about cocoaplums. Yes, now Daisypaw will be happy with me. He can see it now. He'll present Daisypaw with the fruit and then they can be best friends.
The question of his identity shook him from his tiny daydream. "U-um me? I'm R-Rainpaw." Suddenly he felt a little embarrassed. He hated his name. Such a girly name. Maybe I should get an injury worthy of a name change. The light colored tom asked him about his parents. That confused him for a bit. Ever since he's become an apprentice, he barely interacted with them anymore. "My parents don't know I'm here. I-I'm just looking for a cocoaplum for my friend, Daisypaw." He looked sheepishly at the ground as he kneaded the ground. It felt weird to call Daisypaw his friend, since mainly all he does is push him around. Rainpaw would do anything to be his friend. "D-do you think you can show me where I can find one?"

always worrying too much about your appearance, almost as though you’re facing your enemy. walks with light tilted his head in amusement as the little she-cat stuttered out her name. how sweet! if he had any kittens, he would want them to be just like this: cute as a button and very polite. wait, what did she say what her name was? rain... paw? he scrunched his eyebrows in confusion as he glanced at her paws, finding only more gray. he supposed rain was gray, but she certainly didn't look like her name. nor did she act like it. "rainpaw? you have rain on your paws? you seem more like a little mouse to me. " he teased, deciding not to approach the small cat about its odd name. he might scare her away, and that wouldn't do at all! the poor thing looked like she was going to dash away at a moment's notice. well, he supposed, if she did, he wasn't about to stop her. he liked company, but he assumed it would be a bit creepy for an almost-fourty moon old tom to be chasing down a kitten. he frowned a bit when she mentioned that her parents didn't know she was here. i can't leave her be now! it would not do for her to get eaten by an alligator. his father once told him a story of his sibling disappearing and for moons, they had no idea what had happened to him. later, they found one of those scaly giant lizards sitting in the marsh with its jaws open, and spotted bits of white fur stuck in its teeth that had never been digested. gross.
daisypaw. another strange name. assuming this daisypaw and the she-kit's families knew each other, he could only guess they had some odd fascination with paws that they shared with each other. he prayed that they would one day find better suiting names. he shuddered when he remembered his own first name. ugh, it disgusted him even to do this day. he was never trusting his mother to name any of her children ever again. if his parents had anymore children, that is. it seemed after her first litter, sleeping fox had decided she was completely done with childbirth.
"if you don't mind me asking," walks with light meowed, "why does this daisy paws want a cocoplum? they're completely useless, you know." if rain paws' (was that what she said her name was? he felt like it was something different, but this one made more sense to him) friend was ill and she thought it'd help, he certainly didn't want to help lead her into a wild goose chase for something that wouldn't help. it just didn't seem right, the poor thing. whoever gave her this false hope was a very corrupted individual--- "oh, i'm so sorry!" he gasped out, jerking his head up right suddenly, "i forgot to introduce myself. i'm walks with light." he was being very rude today, apparently. ✿

CAN YOU FEEL? CAN YOU FEEL THAT HYBRID RAINBOW? KOKO WA TOUCHUU NADETTE SHINJITAI Rainpaw's eyes widened at the light colored tom's confusion over his name. Rain on my paws? Why would I be named after that? He realized that maybe the older tom wasn't a clan cat. Ah he must be a Loner then. His older siblings have told him and his littermates all about the cats outside of the clan. He's much nicer than I expected a loner to be. Rainpaw wrinkled his nose. He would rather keep his name than be called Little Mouse. What a odd name.
To be honest, he had no idea why Daisypaw even wanted the cocoaplum. All he knew is that the consequences would be dire if he didn't go back to camp with it. His life was on the line. "I d-don't really know why D-Daisypaw wants it. I was just told that if I don't bring it then I have to eat a mouthful of dirt." The little tom let out a dejected sigh. All he wanted was to be friends with Daisypaw and maybe see what makes him so strong so that he himself can become strong too. But all he gets is abuse. Hopefully when I bring him the cocoaplum things will get better. As always Rainpaw remains optimistic about his future.
Walkswithlight. What an odd name. Never in his life had he heard something like that. Walkswithlight. For a loner cat with an odd name, he was pretty nice. Even nicer than Daisypaw and I just met him. Amber eyes beamed over the prospect of finding a new friend. "It's nice to meet you Walkswithlight. So do you think you can help me?" Making new friends is fun and all but Rainpaw was a cat on a mission.

tilting his head, walks with light observed the small she-cat in front of him with a curious look that quickly changed to one of horror. eat a mouthful of dirt? what? that's horrible! even his own brother didn't do that sort of thing to him. the worst many spots ever did was shove him into alligator infested waters once, and it wasn't that bad. he only worried for his life at one point during his scramble back up to shore. 'it builds character,' his ginger and white brother told him once walks with light had climbed to safety, his body shaking like a leaf, 'you'll thank me one day.' god, he hated his brother. he was never quite sure how he could be related to such an evil little fox.
"i... rainy paws, is this daisy paws..." his voice dropped low as if he was afraid the cat in question would here, "bullying you?" the prospect of this gentle, shy she-cat being shoved face first into a pile of filth was not very pleasing in walks with light's eyes. in a way, she reminded him of himself when he was a gawky adolescent. all big fluff of white fur, frightened eyes, head down low to avoid stares. ah, yes, he could remember it now. those days, his mother liked to tease him and say he was exactly like his father and they should call him keeps his head down. little steps did not like that joke at all. he didn't speak to his mate for days. family. truly a magical thing. clearing his thoughts with a bit of a shake, he returned to his original statement, his voice full of quivering worry. "rainy paws, if he is, you must tell your parents. you do not deserve such treatment." see? walks with light could be a good adult figure. he knew he had it in him.
his maw curved into a frown as rainy paws requested his service on the search for the cocoplums. he didn't like the idea of helping give something to a bully (he spit the word out with disdain in his head), but he didn't want his new friend to have to eat a pile of disgusting dirt either. that was just gross and unhygienic. he set his face into a grimace, and opened his mouth to say: "i do not think you should bother with this... daisy paws' demands, but i will help you. if only to save you from getting very nasty sicknesses."
he turned his blue eyes to the scenery around them, searching for the tree that would lead them to their treasure. in this season, the trees would have to be... "rainy paws, keep a look out for blood red trees, please." he cast the gray she-cat a bit of a half smile that quickly twisted into a firm frown as he thought of something, "by the by, my name is not walkswithlight. you need to cast breathes in it. walks. with. light. i walk in light." he couldn't help but naturally get offended when cats get his name wrong. for some reason, all the stranger he meets have to shorten it or just get it wrong entirely. yes, like the name sasha is so 'normal'? what is a sasha anyways?

CAN YOU FEEL? CAN YOU FEEL THAT HYBRID RAINBOW? KOKO WA TOUCHUU NADETTE SHINJITAI Is Daisypaw bullying me? Rainpaw thought over that question again. In a way he guessed that yes Daisypaw was bullying him. But we're friends right? At least that's what he thinks. Honestly, he's never really had a friend that treated him right. Not even his own littermate Eveningpaw. Oh well. It dosen't really matter right? Walkswithlight is still my friend.
Amber eyes widened as Rainpaw realized his mistake. "Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend you." Walks With Light, he still thought it was a strange name. How can someone walk in light? Why not ask and find out? The grey tom looked up at his companion with his head cocked to the side. "What does it mean? How can you walk with light?" Of all the names he's heard in his short life that has got to be the strangest.
Rainpaw's whisker's twitched slightly as he realized that Walks With Light had also made a mistake. "Its Rainpaw. Not Rainy Paws. I'm Rainpaw because I'm an apprentice and soon I'll be a warrior." He couldn't help puff out his chest in pride. He might not be the bravest cat around. But he will be a warrior someday, and he will find a way to help out his clan.

the pale tom immediately simmered down upon rainy paws' stuttered apology, a feeling of guilt lodging itself in his body. it was no big happening, but he couldn't help feel bad about it; it was just part of his big, fat, wimpy nature. something his brother liked to torment him about when they hunted prey. once, they had found a nest of baby cardinals, and walks with light almost cried when the rest of his family feasted on them. for about a week after the occurrence, he tried to only eat plants. it did not end very well. he could still feel the aching sense of hunger deep in his belly when he remembered it. "oh, no, no. it's alright, i—" his words paused with pure bafflement at the little she-cat's question, before an amused smile slipped onto his features. he really did like telling his name's tale. "light symbolizes happiness and hope. when the sun is peaking out in between the trees, like that," he turned his nose towards a ray shining towards the muck of the swamp, "you feel good, don't you, knowing that light is even in this scary place? and like that, there is happiness and hope in my paw steps, so it trails with me wherever ago." yes, a little sappy, but he was a bit of a sappy guy. he liked his name, loved it even, and he couldn't tell how glad he was to finally be rid of his first name. a physical shudder ran through his body when he remembered what his mother called him in his childhood. "rain... paw?" now it was walks with light's turn to revel in the oddity of the she-cat's name, "but that's very mean of your parents to give you such a name." a frown formed on his maw. wouldn't that mean she brought rain with him? unconsciously, he turned his bright blue eyes to the sky to check. as dusky as the swamp was, he knew the day was nice, and a quick scent of the air assured him they weren't expecting any harsh weather. suddenly, he felt very bad for the little she-cat. to live with such a name. it could be a curse, even. thus walks with light decided. "that won't do," he said, deep in thought, "that won't do at all." after a few moments of consideration and slightly creepy observation of the gray cat, walks with light said, "i will call you big eyes," his tone was a bit amused as if he was laughing at his own jest, "since you always seemed to be quite surprised during our whole conversation." quite satisfied with his announcement, walks with light turned to go back to gazing for the cocoplum trees, his eyes sharp and keen. it was only later when he remembered the rest of what big eyes had said. his brows furrowed, he turned to look at the she-cat and ask, "apprentice? warrior? those terms sound familiar. you wouldn't be part of one of those groups, would you?"tagged: ★RAINPAW ☆ words: 510 ☆ notes: big eyes
