"you're the antidote to [everything] except for [me]"
text | "talking " | thoughts
| A hint of damp leafbare chill was beginning to seep into the air as a gusty breeze snaked through the pine forest. Fluffing the short fur of his tabby pelt, Jacknose took a better hold of the squirrel he was dragging in the direction of camp, and hastened his pace. There were waiting mouths to feed back at camp, after all, and the round red squirrel he was carrying would be good for more than one hungry belly. Though it was still early enough in the season that prey remained plentiful, the sharp pangs of hunger were not so far off--better to fill up and stay strong now. That was precisely the reason why Jacknose had walked straight back out of camp upon returning with his earlier border patrol--well that, and some extra fresh air never did any cat harm (which was obviously all he needed, there was no tickle at the back of his throat, thanks so much).
Still, for all his love of fresh air and hunting, the sight of camp ahead, with its series of old fox sets and warm nests, was a welcome one. Loping ahead, encumbered only slightly by the heavy weight in his jaws, Jacknose crossed the remaining distance quickly, moving straight for the freshkill pile. It was still adequately stocked, thank StarClan and his fellow warriors, so the tabby exchanged the squirrel for a mouse and took up a position near the warrior's den, where he began to eat and gaze around to see what cats were filtering in from their day's activities.

Lightningpaw 391 words - tags; Jacknose, Spiderfeather, Darkstorm - notes. Lightningpaw ran through the forest, his fur fluffed up to twice its size to protect him from the chilly leaf-fall air. He opened his jaws to taste the air, veering toward the left as he picked up his mentor, Jacknose's, scent. He had seen him come back from this morning's border patrol (he had been waiting next to the apprentice's den not 'quite' so patiently since he learned where Jacknose had went earlier) and had gaped when he had walked right back out without collecting him. They had to train today, he had promised him only the other day. And Lightningpaw couldn't help but feel the sting of neglect at being left in camp when his mentor went on a border patrol - without him. The black and white tom ran faster, the edges of his vision blurring to a jumble of deep greens and browns and blacks. He was out of breath when he reached his destination, rocking back on his haunches as he looked ahead. The entrance to the camp loomed in front of him, and he stared at the tunnel as if he weren't really seeing it. He was just. . . here. So why did Jacknose's scent take him back to camp? Lightningpaw grumbled and narrowed his eyes, shuffling his slightly chafed paws into the clearing. Blinking in the pale sunlight, Lightningpaw gazed around him, flicking over Spiderfeather's pelt and hardly registering Darkstorm sunning himself as he lay next to the thick underbrush close to the nursery. When he spotted Jacknose next to the fresh kill pile, however, he felt himself deflate. The older warrior grabbed a piece of fresh kill after he set down a squirrel (Lightningpaw noticed it was rather plump but tore his eyes away when he remembered his purpose) and placed himself next to the warrior's den. And then he started to eat. Did he forget about Lightningpaw completely? Squaring his shoulders, the young cat marched over to the brown tabby warrior. " Jacknose," Lightningpaw blurted when he was three fox lengths away, half shouting his words, " Did you forget about me this morning?" He tried hard to keep the pout out of his voice. When he caught his mentor's eyes, he stopped suddenly, starting hard at the ground. He pawed at the dirt. " I thought you were supposed to take me training today."

| Jacknose was halfway through his first bite of mouse when the movement of black and white fur across camp caught his attention. Lightningpaw was padded over, shoulders and stance stiff with what Jacknose could only assume was determination. What, precisely, had gotten into his young apprentice on this otherwise nice leaf-fall day? His confusion increased (and then immediately deflating) as the tom cat began to half howl across a section of camp. That was what had his pelt in a tangle? Heaving a sigh, Jacknose swallowed the bit of mouse still in his jaws, and straightened, the tall tabby's light green gaze both reproachful and slightly amused.
"Forget about you?" He began, taking a deep breath and blissfully ignoring the way it tugged and caught just a bit as he did so. He cleared is nonchalantly,as if it were a part of the conversation rather than a hinderance to it. "Far from the case Lightningpaw. I decided when I was asked to step in for a border patrol this morning that I would let you sleep late and take the morning to practice what you felt you needed to. You're halfway through your apprenticeship," he reminded, implying that he was reaching the point where some of his training was likewise his own responsibility, that he needed to learn to work without immediate direction, as warriors do. "And I wanted you well rested for training in the afternoon. Which, " he gestured with a twist of his paw toward the barely eating mouse sitting on the earth between them, "is why we both need a good meal before heading out. " One raised brow and a lazy tail flick indicated the freshkill pile as, with a small sigh, he settled himself back down and, somewhat ignoring his apprentice and leaving him to take a badger sized hint, went about the business of finishing his lunch.
Apprentices. They thought the whole of the clan revolved around them. Yes, they were important. Yes, he genuinely liked and was pleased with his apprentice's progress but if an apprentice couldn't learn to give himself direction now and again, then Pineclan was in trouble.
Once he had downed the last of his mouse, Jacknose went about the business of cleaning his tabby fur and waiting for Lightningpaw. Upon the apprentice finishing up, Jacknose stood. "Now, if you're quite ready to act like a warrior, let's go teach you how to fight like one."

Lightningpaw 474 words - tags; Jacknose, - notes. Lightningpaw chanced a quick glance at his mentor, and when he saw his face he looked immediately back to the ground. ' Great,' Lightningpaw thought to himself, fighting to keep his paws still. ' Now he thinks I'm a mouse-brain and we're probably not going to do any training at all today.' The black and white tom flattened his ears and a sullen look claimed his face. When Jacknose began. . . chastising him? Explaining to him? Lightningpaw peeked at him from the corner of his eye. So he hadn't forgotten about him after all. He wasn't sure whether to be relieved or just plain stupid. Of course Jacknose wouldn't forget about him, he was just trying to be accommodating. . . And now that he thought about it, he wished he had stayed in his nest for longer. It was chilly out today, and his feather-lined nest was warm and welcoming. Lightningpaw realized crossly he needed to learn patience if he was ever going to be a great PineClan warrior. Jacknose continued, motioning toward the fresh kill pile, implying Lightningpaw should grab something to eat. Forcing a show of reluctance, Lightningpaw pricked up his ears slowly at the mention of afternoon training (he didn't want Jacknose to think he was too excited, like some kit). He followed Jacknose's paw to his half-eaten mouse and nodded slowly. He felt the pang of hunger in his stomach, remembering he hadn't eaten this morning, choosing instead to stand by his den and keep a look out for his mentor. He was glad for the instruction, and when Jacknose signaled to the fresh kill pile with his tail Lightningpaw picked himself up and padded toward it. He had wanted the squirrel his mentor had brought back, but he knew it was too big for just one cat. So instead he shifted through the pieces until he found a small shrew. He walked a few paces away, taking the hint that Jacknose wanted time alone, and downed his lunch in a few quick bites. Waiting as patiently as he could for Jacknose to finish and call him over, Lightning had chose to stretch out in the weak sunlight. He hoped for warmth and a nap to pass the time but instead felt nothing the slight breeze through the camp. Finally he called him over, and Lightningpaw quickly rolled to his pads and walked toward him, fighting back the bounce in his step. He couldn't keep the purr from his throat however when he announced they would do battle training today. Sparring was Lightningpaw's favorite - but only whenever he learned something new (which so far had been every time except the two one-on-one apprentice practice rounds a moon ago). " I'm ready Jacknose!" Lightningpaw meowed, his resolution finally weakening as he bounced twice on the balls of his feet. " Where to?"

| Jacknose watched his apprentice's reaction, his tabby head shaking as the tom slunk away to find himself some lunch. Eating slowly, because he was hungry and enjoying his mouse and not because he was worried about becoming winded, Jacknose resisted the urge to shake his head again--Lightningpaw's shrew disappeared with a sparse few gulps. Oh the energy and enthusiasm of the young. That tom was going to wear himself out before he even made warrior, or shortly thereafter at any rate.
But the warrior could not deny he was impressed that his apprentice lay quietly stretched out in the afternoon light, not saying anything until Jacknose was ready for him. That was an improvement in patience for the black and white cat. Though he might have a ways to go, it was at least also true that he had come a long way from his first moon of training. He would get there, of that, Jacknose had no doubt.
"Today we'll go to the Ellipse Pond," he purred, stretching briefly and then, with a flick of his tail, leading the way out of camp. Since Lightningpaw enjoyed learning his fighting moves so much, they had been progressing through them rapidly. There were few actual maneuvers left to learn-now it was simply a matter of learning to weave them together cohesively and determining how to adapt them to be effective any given situation. Today they would concentrate on the latter, a lesson that Jacknose was looking forward to. His training was a bit unconventional, compared to other cats, but it would make Lightningpaw a better prepared warrior in the end.

OoC|| No problem, some of my replies might be delayed as well as college started for me yesterday again :K
'Today we'll go to the Ellipse Pond.' Lightningpaw perked up at the mention of the pond, where he'd only been once or twice before. Jacknose had barely taken him training there, and the only other time Lightningpaw saw the inviting waters was in passing. Just recently, however, he had been there with Bearpaw. . . The black and white tom nodded slowly, waiting for Jacknose to take the lead out of camp. He followed him, walking behind him a couple fox-lengths away so he wouldn't think he was too excited. Lightningpaw knew that when Jacknose thought he wanted something badly, the older warrior would usually make him wait for it. He scrunched up his face at the thought.
They passed over the tree bridge in companionable silence. Lightningpaw noticed the closer they got to the pond, the more he recognized a chill in the air, and he shivered Leaf-fall was here indeed. Somewhere in the back of his mind he hoped he didn't fall into the water. . . The leaping stones were known to be a tricky course.
As they continued their trek, the undergrowth seemed to grow thicker with every paw step, and Lightningpaw knew they had to be close. Wherever there was a body of water, life stemmed from the source in all directions. He parted his jaws, the cool air washing over his tongue. Patience flying out the window, Lightningpaw ran over to Jacknose's side. "We're almost there, aren't we?" Of course they were; Lightningpaw just wanted him to confirm it. Being this close, his pelt was bristling with excitement. Battle training was his favorite part of his apprenticeship, and today he wanted to show Jacknose just how much his moves had improved. Maybe he'd even want to teach him something new.
