The morning was a notably warm one for a leaf-fall day, and as Lightningpaw made his way haltingly back to the camp he could feel the heat. Glittering rays of sunlight heated his black and white fur, his skin taking on a clammy quality as he limped through the towering pine trees. During a hunting patrol this morning Jacknose had taken him out on, he had had a nasty encounter with a thorn bush and a rather large, sharp thorn had lodged itself deep in his pad. At first he had tried to lick at the wound, hoping to coax the foreign object out, but to no avail. Next he had tried to grasp it with his teeth and pull it out, but that only caused the thorn to bury itself farther into his flesh. Jacknose was forced to stop the session and send him on his way back to camp to see Larkleaf; he hadn't been too pleased. Lightningpaw know he would have to work extra hard tomorrow morning to make up for his blunder today.
When the PineClan camp was in sight, he felt his shoulders sag with relief. Jacknose had taken him deep into their territory today, and so the trek back had been long and rather painful. His mentor hadn't accompanied him, either, telling him he didn't want to completely waste their efforts and so he wouldn't be back until he had caught something for the Clan. This made Lightningpaw's shame grow, and his skin flushed with embarrassment. But now he was only a few fox lengths away from the Medicine cat den, and so he would be able to (hopefully) make it up to Jacknose soon.
"Larkleaf?" Lightningpaw called out tentatively as he approached her den, hoping he wasn't intruding on her doing something important. He paused a couple of paces away before he called out again, a little louder. "Larkleaf? I-I've got a thorn and my pad, and well. . . " his voice trailed off as he picked up his paw to study the swollen flesh. He winced. "I was wondering if you could maybe help get it out. I tried, but. . ." he didn't finish his thought, figuring he would get a lecture if he told her his ways of trying to avoid seeing her. And he had tried to avoid seeing her, really tried. The truth behind his earlier attempts was that he thought Larkleaf to be incredibly beautiful, and he did not want to go see her, ask for her help, have her touch him, because every time he did see her, he'd freeze. He would freeze, wide eyed for a moment or two, and then look away guiltily, remembering himself and who she was. She was the medicine cat, and she was many moons older than he was and probably would have no interest in him, medicine cat or not. Besides, he wouldn't even know where to begin to try to claim her affections. He was her first crush, and in all honest truth he had no idea how to act.
