Hailwhisker
"yesterday we were just [children] ; dreaming dreams with [happy endings]"
text | "talking" | thoughts
| The early hours of the morning were far from the calico's favorite--she was not exactly the kind of warrior who sprung from her nest, ready for the dawn patrol with a grin stretched across her muzzle. Unfortunately, she was the kind of warrior who woke up at the smallest interruptions and so, when the dawn patrol stirred and slipped (even quietly) from their own nests, Hailwhisker inevitably remained half awake and unable to fall back to sleep. Sighing heavily, the she-cat put a paw over her ears in an attempt to drown out the sounds of quiet conversation beyond the den walls but, as she heard the sound of pawsteps retreating through the camp wall, she realized her efforts were in vain. She might not be fully awake but all the same, there would be no falling back to sleep this morning. A second sigh followed the first one as she pulled herself heavily to her paws, sitting up in her nest, blinking in the faint gray light of not quite dawn.
After a long moment of attempting to gain her bearings and clear her sleepy vision, Hailwhisker left her nest and, weaving through the nests nearest her, made her way to the den's entrance before slipping into the vacant camp where stars still glittered dully overhead. Settling back into a sitting position, the dusty brown coated molly began licking her sleep ruffled pelt into place, ears pricked for the sounds of a (slowly) rousing clan.

Redfrost rolled onto his back, flattening his ears against the rustling of fur and nests as warriors left for the dawn patrol. He rolled over again, face down, brows furrowing as he tried to cover his nose with his tail. But no matter how hard he tried to tune out the disturbances, from inside and outside of his den, he couldn't find the blank peacefulness he knew as sleep. Redfrost's nostrils flared as his yellow eyes flashed open with annoyance. Fine. He would get up, but he'd make sure to be worthless for the rest of the day.
He rose leisurely to his paws, taking slow steps out of his nest and toward the exit of the den, making sure to bump the nests of a few sleeping warriors and trail his tail over a nose or two. If he couldn't be asleep, why should they? Redfrost squinted against the pale morning sunlight as he gazed around camp. The sun was beginning to shine, but it gave very little warmth. This was leaf-fall after all, and even in BeachClan cats felt the increasingly negative affects in the change of season. Stars still shone in the light purple and pink sky, and if he was a cat that cared to notice such things, he would have summed it up as being something close to beautiful.
Catching sight of a familiar dilute calico pelt, Redfrost felt his ears prick and unconsciously straightened his stance. Rolling his shoulders back, he sauntered over to her, falling into his easy signature gait. Hailwhisker was sitting with her back turned to him, and so he made himself known by brushing his tail across and over her shoulders. He bent down to whisper a deep, "Shouldn't you still be asleep," in her ear before walking around her form to stand across from her. It wasn't a question, but a statement that he figured wouldn't get a verbal reply, but a notoriously routine eye roll. "I know I should be," Redfrost half scoffed, twisting his lips into a humorless smirk. He watched her for a brief moment as she continued to wash her pelt, ignoring him. He was used to it. He didn't miss a beat as he said, "I guess your allure goes too deep for me to even ignore in sleep." This time he beat her to their customary eye roll.
Redfrost had known Hailwhisker for quite some time, well, known about her at least. He hadn't really started talking to her until he had become a warrior and his nest had just so happened to be placed next to hers, going through their apprenticeships with a separate group of friends. She was a moon older than he was, and so they had hung out with different crowds. It was these past couple of moons that he was beginning to feel some kind of way toward the she-cat. She had feigned no interest toward him at first. He didn't mind though; it just made him try harder. Sometimes he felt as if she returned his advances, but he didn't take them seriously. Not yet at least. For now this was just a game that Redfrost would ride out for as long as she would indulge him. "Beach today?" He suggested, raising an eyebrow. He would stick to being worthless today, but why not be worthless with Hailwhisker?

Hailwhisker
"yesterday we were just [children] ; dreaming dreams with [happy endings]"
text | "talking" | thoughts
| A cat does not earn the warrior name of -whisker by being inadequately aware of her surrounding situation. Hailwhisker, one of the finest hunters in Beachclan, is not an exception in that matter and so, the quiet of his breathing, the presence of his scent and the not quite inaudible settle of his paw steps all tell the she-cat that he is behind her a fair few moments before the feeling of his tail against her shoulders does. Of course, armed with the knowledge of his approach, she does choose to ignore him (just another part of this game they both seem to enjoy playing and have been for a while now). As the fluffy ginger tabby ail begins to drop away, and Redfrost appears in her line of vision, of course the game must end (that part at least). Ignoring him is further tossed into the ocean as his muzzle leans in toward her ear, close but not touching, and his deep voice quietly comments.
She was well aware that nothing in his voice made the words a question, but half the fun of Redfrost is the bickering, so Hailwhisker's eyes give their signature roll and she opens her jaws to speak. As usual, the frog mouthed tom keeps going and the words that tumble out are likely eye roll earning indeed. He beats her to that too and so, shaking her head, she swats his nose with her tail and turns back to finish licking a tuft of fur flat along her back.
The warrior would prefer never to admit it, least of all the Redfrost, but she quite enjoys this back and forth of theirs. Though on the whole she gets along with nearly any cat, and is fairly easy going, she always has a sharp tongue when she wants to and no cat brings quite the multitude of opportunities for sarcasm that he does. It's challenging, trying to battle down his big ego and keep him on his toes--and immensely satisfying all the same. It's that knowledge, excitement and tension that has her lifting herself easily to her paws at his invitation, though the tone in which she replies makes it sound as if she is deigning to go with him at great personal sacrifice. "I suppose, if you need the company." But there's also a playful purr there, carefully hidden so that most cats wouldn't notice (Redfrost isn't exactly most cats).

He watched her for a time, taking an extended period to deliver him a reply. Instead of responding she smacked his nose with her tail and went about busying herself with washing her pelt. Refrost's lips twisted into a knowing grin. "You like these games," He mock whispered. "Admit it, you can't get enough of me." His grin deepened as he stood to his paws and shook out his pelt. Bits of sand sprinkled onto the ground. He made a face at her, scrunching up his eyes and nose.
Finally Hailwhisker stood to her paws and Redfrost turned away from her, sauntering down the expanse of sand, his paws veering toward the well traveled path to the Twoleg beach. He heard her lackluster acceptance of his invitation - but that's all he needed. She agreed to go with him and that was that. Redfrost flicked his ears in acknowledgement of her words and gave her a short, throaty laugh. "Your company is the only company I require." He sneaked a look over his shoulder and shot her a dark look, followed by a smirk. He laughed again.
He slowed his gait, falling in besides Hailwhisker. He chanced a glance at her from the corner of his eye. Redfrost had almost felt that she had agreed to join him a little more quicker than usual, but that was just probably what he wanted to think had happened. He pushed the thought away and rolled his eyes toward her, nudging her side with his shoulder. They were approaching the Twoleg Beach, and a few twolegs were scattered on the sand with their kits. "You're the kittypet," Redfrost spoke close to Hailwhisker's ear, their pelts nearly touching.. "I'll bring you back something shiny." He winked at her, and with that he left her side to skirt around some thick underbrush.

Hailwhisker
"yesterday we were just [children] ; dreaming dreams with [happy endings]"
text | "talking" | thoughts
| In the midst of her careful grooming, Hailwhisker looked up, giving him an arch look, which only deepened as his shaking littered bits of sand at her paws. She considered his comments for a moment, weighing out the best response that was adequately scoffing, sarcastic and annoyed. "I think maybe you're projecting Redfrost," she settled on, deciding that the best course of action was to turn his words right around on him. After all, of the two of them, he was the one more prone to instigating these little conversations (not that she minded, nor that she would ever truly admit that without heavy amounts of force).
She waited a long moment after standing to pad after him, watching his gait with a critical and amused eye, not exactly certain what effect he was going for. He looked a bit like a kit making it's first tumbling steps over uneven, loose sand: unintentionally awkward and completely unawares. Her whiskers shook with silent amusement but, unwilling to be caught watching, she quickly followed after, slowing slightly as he began to turn, also not wishing to be seen as too eager (she wasn't, after all). "Hmm, easy to please. I'm sure there are plenty of she-cats who find that to be a desirable quality in a tom." She matched his smirk with one of her own, lengthening her stride so they were walking shoulder to shoulder for the time being.
But two legs being what they were, leave it to them to ruin any good thing. Despite the early hour, a small clan of them, complete with kits, were stumbling and playing on the beach ahead. She was about to suggest going the other direction when his voice was in her ear again. Subduing most of she shiver that coursed through her pelt, she nodded, a little confused, and watched as he all but disappeared behind the brush. Not really sure what he was planning or what he expected her to do, Hailwhisker just crouched low, watching the twolegs dubiously, enjoying the relative camoflague her dilute calico fur provided her against the shadowing, early morning sand.

Redfrost wove around the looming sand dunes, skilled paws traveling lightly in the chilly grit. Halfway down the shore he inched himself just over the crest of one, the thick stalks of marram grass camouflaging his red fur in the dawn light. Hailwhisker's words rang in his ears as stared out at the twoleg family building some kind of contraption on the beach. A smirk twisted his lips as he recalled her saying that there were plenty of she-cats who would find his 'easy to please trait' desirable. Well, maybe in the other Clans he'd have a couple more she-cats padding after him (he was extremely handsome after all), but in BeachClan they all stuck their noses up at him, seeming to prefer one another. All that is, except Hailwhisker. He caught one of them fawning over her the other day, and Redfrost didn't know whether to roll his eyes or to tell the cat that she wasn't interested. . . on her behalf. Redfrost had rolled his eyes, and would keep rolling his eyes at any further advances - for now. Hailwhisker hadn't seemed to be interested in the fairer gender, and that. . . pleased him.
His brows furrowed as he shoved these wayward thoughts to the back of his mind and tore his gaze away from the idling twolegs and their kits. Yellow eyes turned back to where he had left Hailwhisker, trying to see what progress she had made in the faint orange light. Redfrost's eyes narrowed as she appeared to be in the same spot he had left her. Didn't she know this game? He let out a sound between a growl and a displeased huff, taking one last look at the twolegs before turning away from them and beginning to make his way back to the crouched, seemingly clueless form of Hailwhisker.
The closer his got to her the lighter his paw steps became, until he was practically gliding across the sand. He looked down at her, his stare blank. "Do you forget how this works?" Redfrost asked insipidly. "You go down to the beach. You play the cute little kitty pet - purr purr purr. I bring you back something sparkly while they're too busy worshiping you." He arched an eyebrow. "Unless. . . are you afraid?" When he spoke his last word his face transformed into quite an exhibit. First he narrowed his eyes, and then they grew wide. His face was washed with an ear-splitting grin. Suddenly heavily lidded eyes studded her in bemusement. "You're afraid of twolegs. . . or are you afraid you'll just like all the attention? The heavy, annoying cooing and petting and fuss?" His grin eased into a sly smirk. "If that's what you're into, I'm sure I can oblige." His effortless smirk remained a few seconds more as he studied her quietly, waiting for a reaction that would spark some type of emotion.

Hailwhisker
"yesterday we were just [children] ; dreaming dreams with [happy endings]"
text | "talking" | thoughts
| She was obviously not afraid, thank you very much. She was a Beachclan warrior--nothing scared her (except perhaps the idea of climbing those cliffs, but what cat could blame her? Cliffclanners must be part bird to live where they did). Growling in slight annoyance, she twitched her tail agitatedly and gave her best scowl. "I'm not afraid, fish brain," she hissed quietly, more displeased by his latter accusations than the earlier ones. "I've never been the kittypet before." She explained a moment later, eyeing the two legs warily. She always did the taking, quick limbed and a hunter by nature, she always ended up as the cat who did the looking and the taking when they played the old Beachclan game. Having never been on the other end, she wasn't entirely certain how to entice or distract the two legs.
Luckily, she thought she might have found an opening that would allow her to distract him from the game and her glaring lack of faux kittypet skills. At his last comment, Hailwhisker straightened up and shot him a challenging look. "Please," she scoffed, pressing a little closer (literally and figuratively)--upping this game the played. "You wouldn't know what to do if I gave you half a chance," the pale calico concluded, circling him once, rubbing her pelt against his before dashing off farther inland, throwing sand up in her wake as she moved.

The smirk on Redfrost's face deepened at Hailwhisker's apparent annoyance. When she scowled at him, Redfrost raised both eyebrows and purred out a throaty, "Oh-ho!" raising one paw as he leaned away from her in mock fear. He flattened his ears against his skull playfully. When she hissed at him, he struggled to hide his smile, trying to curl his lips under his teeth to suppress his reaction. "Might want to lose that sass before you prance over to your twolegs," he meowed darkly, looking at her sideways. He added extra emphasis on your twolegs, hoping it would get under her skin.
When Hailwhisker voiced she had never been a kitty pet before, he almost sensed her apprehension, and somewhere deep in his chest he felt a dull tug. A random, wayward thought crossed his mind, telling him he didn't want her to do it if she wasn't confident enough she could pull it off. But Redfrost ignored it, blinking his eyes and lowering his gaze. He waited as patiently as he could as she studied the twolegs in the distance, but when she looked back to him he made sure she caught the exaggerated roll of his eyes and his breathy exhale.
Hailwhisker scoffed at his remarks and Redfrost's grin flashed across his maw, yellow eyes sparkling triumphantly. He opened his mouth to boast some more, ready to go into explicit details on just how he could please her, when she beat him to the punch, catching him completely off guard. She pressed her body closer to his and his eyes narrowed, the grin sliding from his face to leave him expressionless. Hailwhisker shot off a snarky comment, one even he would be proud to claim as his own, before she circled around him, her body skimming against his own. He would never admit to it, but he felt himself press against her in return, and his heart rate accelerated. Before he could say a word, she speed down the beach toward the small twoleg family tottering along the shore. He allowed himself to watch her for a brief moment, golden eyes smoldering with a dark desire.
Redfrost blinked and turned away, his features impassive as he made his way back down the beach. He found the sand dune he had climbed earlier, and he crept along the shifting sand once more, positioning himself behind the thick dry grass. When he spotted Hailwhisker making her way toward the twolegs, he felt his muscles tense in preparation. Once he saw an opening, he would be ready. And if the twolegs didn't take too kindly to Hailwhisker, he would be waiting.
